GRIMM: Fairy tales come to life in explosive dance mix

Familiar fairy tales get a raw, contemporary edge in GRIMM, the energetic dance performance coming down to Amsterdam in May. What happens when classic ballet steps collide with explosive hip-hop moves? Exactly that is what you can expect from this visual and physical spectacle show for young and old.

With GRIMM bring ISH Dance Collective and the Junior Company of the Dutch National Ballet a daring reinterpretation of the famous fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Think Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Snow White, but in a dazzling mix of styles, beats and storytelling. The performance can be seen on May 8 and 9 in De Meervaart, on May 16 and 17 in Royal Theater Carré and on June 23 and 24 at National Opera & Ballet.

The story follows two brothers who end up in a fantasy world via a video game. There they meet iconic fairy tale characters and take on a dark witch who wants to rule four kingdoms. What follows is an adventurous journey in which dance is the language and imagination is the engine.

Visually, GRIMM is at least as impressive as physically. Thanks to clever video projections, the set continuously transforms: from a colorful spring forest to a menacing witch's forest. The dancers switch effortlessly between styles, from elegant pirouettes to powerful head spins and popping-and-locking. Ballet lovers will recognize subtle references to classics such as Swan Lake, while hip-hop fans will be treated to raw energy and technical perfection.

“GRIMM proves that when worlds collide - from fairy tale to street - pure magic is created on stage.”

Behind this creative spectacle are Marco Gerris and Ernst Meisner, whose completely different backgrounds actually create a unique synergy. Their collaboration proves that boundaries between dance styles are increasingly blurred. The result is an accessible, surprising performance that touches both seasoned dance lovers and new audiences.

After a successful first tour, GRIMM returns to the stage, and for good reason. This production demonstrates how timeless stories can be retold - fresh, energetic and full of guts.
